How to Answer the Interview Question “Tell Me About Yourself”

Tell me about yourself comes up very frequently in interviews and most of the time it’s the first opportunity you have to make a good impression.

It may sound simple, but many candidates aren’t sure what they should say or what the interviewer wants to know. The interviewer isn’t asking about what you like to do at the weekends, or your favourite colour, they want to know more about what you can bring to the job. The key is to keep your answer professional, relevant and focused on what you have done and what you can do.

Start With What You Do Now

Begin by telling the panel about your current work situation. If you’re employed, talk about what you are doing in your current job and the main responsibilities you have. If you’re looking for work, tell the interviewer what type of role you’re searching for and the experience you have that is relevant to the role.

Always focus on skills that are relevant to the role you are interviewing for.

For example:

“I’m currently working as a warehouse Loader, where I’m responsible for loading the lorries with stock and supporting the wider Warehouse team.”

This shows the interviewer an immediate understanding of your background.

Talk About Your Previous Experience

After you’ve explained what you’re currently doing, discuss the experience and skills that you’ve gained in your job.

You don’t need to explain every job you’ve had. Instead focus on your experience to date. Think about the main responsibilities, achievements and skills that demonstrate you’re suitable.

If you are applying for a warehouse operative for example, you might want to mention relevant machinery, systems, qualifications, projects or environments you have worked with.

Explain Why You’re Interested in the Role

Your answer should eventually lead into why you’re interested in the position you’re interviewing for. Explain that you see it as a natural progression.

Employers want to see that you understand the opportunity and have a genuine reason for applying. With this in mind, you’re now in the perfect position to answer the dreaded “tell me about yourself” question.
